In the World of Cinema, Lot of experiments has been done in every aspect of Film Making, of which some worked and some didn’t. But all these experiments are worth doing in finding the new ways of experiencing a movie. One such experiment has recently been done by me as a Director with the title of the movie being “PRAYOGAM”.
DIRECTOR’S INTRODUCTION:
After finishing B.Tech, I worked as a Software Programmer in Delhi, left the job and went to UK to do Masters in Film Making course. While pursuing my masters I got an Intriguing Idea which resulted as “PRAYOGAM” movie.
STORY DETAILS:
It is a story about a scientist who runs a website named “PRAYOGAM” to which public will mail their problems. Scientist takes up a major problem and tries to solve it in his own ways and establishes himself as a parallel government. This time the major problem is Drugs. He conducts an experiment to catch the Drug Mafia. During this experiment, apart from catching drug mafia, the story runs across four different groups of people. They are Police, Gangsters, Students and Sex Workers. Story shows the relationship between the individuals of these groups and among the individuals of the same group. It portrays their emotions, conflicts, psychologies and philosophies they follow in their lives. Finally it presents the world they live in and the kind of system they follow from the maker’s point of view.
PRESENTATION DETAILS:
This story has been presented in a very unique way and is probably happening for the first time in the history of World Cinema. “PRAYOGAM” Movie runtime is about 2 hrs 23 min, in which almost 2 hrs of the story will be presented in a split screen format where the theatre screen is split into 4 different frames and each frame represents one single fixed location. Each location has been shot for about 2 hrs without any cut, that is, for 4 locations, four 2 hrs single shots will run in parallel for about 2 hrs. Since the story is related to these 4 locations, I used few techniques and made it possible for the audience to watch all these 4 locations without any confusion. I believe that this kind of presentation will give a unique experience for the audience which none other movie has given till now.
MAKING DETAILS:
In this kind of presentation, there are four 2 hrs single shots of four different locations which are Kitchen, Cell, Jeep and Den. Since the story is told in these four locations, the situations happening in those locations are inter-dependant and inter-related to each other. As the scenes should run according to the screen-play, the beginning and ending of each scene and inter-related scenes of all locations should run according to the timing pre-imagined on paper. There are 3 major challenges in this kind of presentation. First is, as it is a 2 hrs single shot without any cut, if there is any mistake happened after 1 hr either by artist or by technician, the whole sequence of that location should be shot from the beginning. Second is, during phone conversation among actors between two locations, action and reaction of dialogues should look very natural. At this point, synchronizing every second of those two locations becomes the major challenge. Achieving this is difficult because, each location shoot will happen in different days and different timings. Third is, with 2 hrs Jeep travelling shot. Here Jeep should travel through various locations in the city for about 2 hrs. While travelling, Jeep should reach at particular pre-fixed location in exact pre-mentioned time, finish the scene and start to reach next location at next mentioned time. Achieving this is highly difficult because the traffic will not be under our control, sometimes traffic policemen come and stop, after an explanation they may leave but time is wasted since camera will be in running mode. So to achieve this whole ideal task, I have prepared a 66 days planning schedule, selected 40+ artists, trained them for 66 days on location on sets and finally went for shoot and finalized each location shot within few takes. All the above tasks have successfully been overcame with the support of my entire “PRAYOGAM” team and achieved the best result which I Imagined.
